John joined Verbalplanet in October 2017 learning Italian. Whilst making some progress using traditional self study methods, John felt he needed more conversation practice to really feel confident in speaking the language.
Being a busy traveller, John needed a solution which allowed hime to learn a language online from any location but which also provided continuity in his studies. Despite living in New Zealand and travelling extensively, by using Verbalplanet, John was able to study Italian online and take classes with a native Italian tutor living in Rome, giving an authentic feel to his studies and a real boost to his language skills and confidence.
I joined Verbalplanet in 2017 wanting to learn Italian. I live in New Zealand but travel with work in Europe for four months a year. I am lucky to speak French already. Usually I spend over a month each year in Italy so I wanted to show more respect to the locals by learning their language.
I have a 25 year-old travel business specialising in French travel, and learning French was a natural progression to that business. Over the last ten years I have also been taking many escorted tours through the Italian countryside. In September 2017 I was staying for the fourth time at a lovely four star hotel in Tuscany and I mentioned to the manager that we only ever speak English and how inconsiderate it was that I never attempted speaking some Italian with him. I mentioned to him that when I next return to his hotel, that we will only speak Italian! Thanks to Verbalplanet this will become a reality next month!
For me I have always enjoyed languages and regularly learnt Latin and French at school, and then I learnt Japanese. The joy of sitting at a bar with the locals speaking in their own language always thrills me!
I began to learn Italian by studying a text book, but to be confident in the language I needed a more intensive approach, and luckily I came across Verbalplanet. This service provided the framework and the means for an incredible learning experience. Since starting over a year ago I have been having two lessons per week – no classrooms, no set routines.
The processing of booking and paying for lessons is so easy, and I have been encouraging anyone wanting to listen, to do the same with any other language! Sometimes I have lessons from a hotel room in Paris, or an apartment on the Cote d’Azur in France, or from my home in New Zealand – the booking system even manages the time differences perfectly!

My complete joy however was in finding my teacher Andrea Miranda who is based just out of Rome. He supports and encourages me with sensitivity, kindness and humour. As part of our lessons together we talk in Italian about everything and anything, whilst learning at the same time. He shares his mother’s favourite recipes, and talks about how to make an Amatriciana pasta, or I explain everything about the game of cricket!
We’ve talked about the lives of famous personalities like Napoleon Bonaparte and Vincent Van Gogh, the differences in our societies, and of his family gatherings and long lunches. We just talk. I just learn. Verbalplanet and all Italian learners are fortunate to have such a fine young teacher ready to help learn his language.
The Italian language is a Romance language spoken by about 70 million people, primarily in Italy and San Marino. It is also one of the official languages of Switzerland and is the second official language in Vatican City. Italian forms part of the Indo-European family of languages.
The history of the Italian language is quite complex but the modern standard of the language was largely shaped by relatively recent events. Italian was first formalized in the first years of the 14th century through the works of Dante Alighieri, who mixed southern Italian languages, especially Sicilian, with his native Tuscan in his epic poems known collectively as the Commedia.
Regular conversation practice is the key to fluency. There's no better way to build confidence, develop comprehension skills and an authentic accent. Our classes are fun, effective and guaranteed to get you talking.
